T-Splines Ties Licensing to Customer, not Computer

T-Splines, Inc., a leading provider of organic 3d modeling software in styling, industrial design, CAD, CAE and entertainment, today announced that effective immediately, all licenses of T-Splines for Rhino and T-Splines for Maya may be activated on one work computer and one personal computer.

"Since the release of T-Splines for Rhino last month, we were surprised by the very high number of users who reported that they work on a desktop machine for their day job, then continue their work at home at night on a laptop or a personal computer. These users expressed a desire to be able to continue their T-Splines work, along with their CAD work, at home after being in the office," said Matt Sederberg, CEO of T-Splines.

T-Splines is Pick of the Week at Desktop Engineering

T-Splines is cool stuff. T-Splines combines NURBS and subds — sub-divisional surfaces — letting you futz with models as a single surface instead of a collection of patches. What it boils down to is that it gives you the type of free-form modeling tools you’d find in an animation package. Even with complex geometries, the company tells me that you can model surfaces that are free of gaps and with curvatures continuous all the way through.

DE will soon be reviewing T-Splines for Rhino 4.0 plug-in. If you’re into fiddling with NURBS and subds, you can start doing your own review right now by downloading the beta release from the company website. The links are in today’s write-up.

T-Splines Rhino Beta Released

T-Splines, Inc. today announced the beta release of T-Splines for Rhino 4, giving designers the flexibility of subdivision surfaces with the precision of NURBS. The beta product is available as a free download for a limited time at www.tsplines.com.

T-Spline models are easy to edit, having on average 50% less control points than the identical NURBS model. Featured T-Splines workflows new to Rhino include subdivision surface box modeling, creating a single surface from a complex network of curves, and merging non-touching surfaces together into a single surface. The plugin also comes with a built-in translator to convert polygonal mesh files into T-Splines and NURBS.

Tom Sederberg
Dr. Tom Sederberg, T-Splines founder, to receive the 2006 SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award

ACM SIGGRAPH will award its 2006 Computer Graphics Achievement Award to Thomas W. Sederberg for his contributions to free-form deformation (FFD) and the use of algebraic geometry in geometric modeling. The Computer Graphics Achievement award is given each year for outstanding achievement in computer graphics and interactive techniques. Sederberg, a professor in the Computer Science Department at Brigham Young University, and associate dean of BYU’s College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, will receive his award at Siggraph 2006, July 30-August 3, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston, MA. Optimal Solutions
T-Splines and Sculptor

T-Splines was a natural solution for Optimal Solutions. T-Splines-based free-form deformation will allow Sculptor to accommodate high detail or extrusions in arbitrary areas of the mesh. This allows for a more accurate representation of the mesh, and also saves time by eliminating unnecessary control points from the ASD volume. By introducing their new T-Spline deformations, Optimal Solutions is remaining on the cutting-edge of shape deformation software. Read more...

THE TWO FACES OF T-SPLINES

T-Splines is a new NURBS-like surface type that opens up new frontiers in modeling by allowing you to add local detail without changing the surface. T-Splines also allows you to merge NURBS patches together to create truly seamless models. Learn how to create a face in T-Splines and use T-Splines in your workflow.

The Debate: T-Splines v. NURBS v. SUBDS

I enjoy reading the forums at highend3d and other sites to see what the current buzz is about. I am particularly interested in discussions that debate the relative merits of NURBS and subds. From the standpoint of our company, we hope that these debates will eventually die down because T-Splines will predominate. Read more...

Sergio Rosa review
Review of the T-Splines Maya Plugin by artist Sergio Rosa

These last years we've witnessed some incredibly amazing advances when it comes to modeling techniques. We not only have those great modeling programs that offer an extremely wide range of tools that make your life easier, but we also have apps like zBrush that allow to sculpt directly with the mouse, or even more advanced systems such as SensAble which supposedly let you model as if you were actually working with clay. T-Splines is a brand new modeling system that tries to marry the best of the Polygons and NURBS worlds to create a very versatile system that promises to make the modeler's life easier. Read more...

T-Splines Maya Plugin 1.1 reviewed by Fred Galpern in vfxworld.com

T-Splines is a new modeling plug-in for that allows users to go beyond basic NURBS modeling. Taking the wish lists of many modelers into account, T-Splines LLC (yep, they like their product so much they named the company after it) has created a method of modeling with the precision of NURBS while adding much more speed and freedom. T-Splines models are seamless, meaning that portions of a low-resolution model can be high detail, with no gaps in between. Read more...

From T-Squares to T-Splines

There's been a slow buzz building around a new kind of modeling algorithm introduced a couple years ago using what the developer is calling "T-Splines". The big deal - and for anyone who's run into this problem it is a big deal - is the ability to dead end a spline as shown in the above image (note the junction in the green bullseye). The translation between NURBs and T-Splines is also pretty impressive. There have been some recent announcements, some beta testing, and the first plug-in (for Maya) is on sale. I expect more apps will be supported in the near future so this might be worth checking out now. Read more...

T-Splines introduced to CG Society

T-Splines are a new surface formulation initially introduced in the Siggraph papers sessions in 2003 and 2004. T-Splines are a superset of NURBS and SubDs, and can convert losslessly from either, as well as polymeshes. T-Splines also allow T-Junctions, which allow you to terminate isoparms/edgeloops in a T, without creating 'n-gons'. That is, the surface still shades and deforms like a quad, without needing extra geometry. Read more...

Conversation with Architosh editor Anthony Frausto-Robledo

A company Architosh just discovered at the show is T-Splines. Architosh editor, Anthony Frausto-Robledo, spoke with Matthew Sederberg CEO, about what T-Splines is. "T-Splines is a Maya plugin that greatly increases Maya's modeling capabilities," said Sederberg. "And we are big time Mac guys," he added. The company was showing off their product on the Macintosh platform (which is what drew us to their booth). T-Splines, LLC is a 3d modeling software firm located in Utah and was founded last year by Dr. Thomas Sederberg, the inventor of T-Splines and his son Matt, who is acting CEO. Read more...
